Where Breville Publishes Espresso Instruction Books, and How to Cite One

Breville hosts instruction books on two different paths. One carries the region and revision in the filename and one carries neither, which decides whether a citation is reproducible.

Breville publishes its espresso instruction books openly, with no login, on two different paths, and only one of the two names the region and the revision of the document you are reading.

The eight instruction books, and where each one lives

Eight Breville espresso instruction books were downloaded on 13 August 2026. All eight returned HTTP 200 and none required a login.

The counting rule: a document counts as published when a plain HTTPS GET of its URL returns HTTP 200 and a readable PDF, with no login and no form. Eight of eight.

The two paths are not equivalent

assets.breville.com names the model, the region and the revision inside the filename. breville.com/content/dam/ names the model only.

A citation built on the second path cannot name the document from its URL alone. It can say the BES878 manual, which is not a document, because more than one BES878 manual exists.

The issue code is recoverable, and it is printed inside the book. Every one of the eight documents carries a two-character issue code on its back page, beside the model number and the region tag. 8 of 8, counted on 13 August 2026 by searching each document’s text for a letter followed by two digits adjacent to its model number.

So the /content/dam/ path costs a lookup, not a citation. Open the document, read the back page, cite the code. The BES840 book labels it in words: Issue - E15.

The two digits appear to be the year. The U22 book carries Copyright Breville Pty. Ltd. 2022 and the H19 book carries 2019. That holds on the two documents where both the code and a copyright year were read, and it is offered as an observation on those two rather than as a rule Breville states anywhere.

Why the revision matters, proven on one model

Two revisions of the same model in the same region are different documents.

BES870 USCM revision O22 and BES870 USCM revision V23 are both 112 pages. They are not the same file. Their internal typesetting differs, including which font carries the numerals: the V23 typeface maps numerals through a character table that returns letters when the text layer is extracted, and the O22 file does not.

So a sentence reading “the BES870 manual states” is not reproducible. A reader cannot check it, because it does not identify which of two documents was read. The reproducible form names all three parts:

Where the URL omits the code, the document still carries it, so the reproducible form is available for every book in the set.

What the region code tells you

Breville publishes different instruction books for different markets, and the region code is in the filename on the citable path.

A specification read from an ANZ book describes a machine sold on 230 volts. A USCM book describes one sold on 120. Quoting a power figure without the region attached states a fact about the wrong machine.

How to find the book for the machine in front of you

Three fields identify a Breville instruction book: the model number, the region, and the revision code.

The model number is printed on the rating label on the underside of the machine, in the form BES870. The region follows from where the machine was sold. The revision is the two-character code in the filename on assets.breville.com, such as O22, V23, F22, C22 or I22.

Breville also publishes a product hub at breville.com/en-us/producthub, which is the entry point for the /content/dam/ copies.

What Breville does not publish alongside the instruction books

Checked across all eight documents on 13 August 2026.

  • No parts diagram and no part numbers. Nothing in any of the eight identifies a replaceable component by number.
  • No service manual. Of the five manufacturers examined on this site, only Gaggia publishes one.
  • No statement that a component from one model fits another. The instruction books specify a 54mm portafilter across models and never say a basket is interchangeable.
  • No brew temperature at the group and no OPV pressure setting.

Where a question needs one of those, no Breville document answers it, and this site says so rather than estimating.
