Breville Portafilter Size, as the Instruction Books State It
Breville prints 54mm for both the portafilter and the tamper in its espresso instruction books. It never states that a basket from one model fits another.
Breville espresso machines take a 54mm portafilter, stated in the instruction book for every model checked, and the same books also specify a 54mm tamper.
What the instruction books state
Three Breville instruction books each specify a 54mm portafilter and a 54mm tamper, in the component list near the front of the document.

Why the revision and the region belong in the citation
A Breville manual is identified by three things, and the model number alone is not enough. Documents on assets.breville.com carry the model, a region code and a revision code in the filename, as in BES870_USCM_IB_O22_LR.pdf.
The same model has more than one revision. BES870_USCM_IB_O22_LR.pdf and BES870_USCM_IB_V23_LR.pdf are both the BES870 for the same market. Documents served from the breville.com/content/dam/ path carry only the model, so a citation to one of those cannot name a revision, and that limitation travels with the citation.
Breville is the only one of five brands that publishes this
Of five espresso manufacturers checked on 13 August 2026, Breville is the only one that states a portafilter dimension in its published documents.
The counting rule, so the figure is reproducible: a brand counts as publishing an attribute when the attribute appears in a document hosted by the manufacturer or its national distributor, reachable without a login. Retailer re-hosts do not count. The five brands checked are Philips, Gaggia, Breville, De’Longhi and Rocket Espresso. Rancilio was checked and excluded from the five because its technical portal requires a User ID and password.
The four checked and found not to state it are Philips, Gaggia, De’Longhi and Rocket Espresso. Philips and De’Longhi publish specification tables covering voltage, pressure, capacity, dimensions and weight, and neither table carries a portafilter measurement. Gaggia publishes a parts diagram with 90 numbered parts and no portafilter dimension appears on it.
What the manuals do not state
No Breville document states that a portafilter or basket from one model fits another model, and the shared 54mm figure is not a compatibility statement.
Three machines documented at 54mm is three machines documented at 54mm. Whether a basket lifts from a BES870 into a BES878 is a question the instruction books never address, and no Breville parts catalogue exists to answer it, because Breville publishes no parts diagram and no part numbers.
The honest form of the finding is that all three documents specify the same dimension. Anything beyond that would be inference presented as fact.
What is filed under the same heading and is not the same thing
The filter baskets are named in the manuals and the portafilter is measured, which are two different kinds of statement. The books list a Single Wall filter and a Dual Wall filter as supplied accessories. Neither is given a diameter, a part number or a compatibility note.
